WILLIAMSTOWN — Mount Greylock and Pittsfield tied for the Berkshire North golf title last year. In 2016, the Mounties have earned early bragging rights.

Ben Gillooly was medalist, who a 4-over-par 39 as Greylock scored a 169-174 win over PHS at Waubeeka Golf Links.

The teams played the par-35 back nine at Waubeeka. Gillooly was the only Mountie (2-0, 2-0 Berkshire North) to shoot under 40. Kyle Alvarez shot 40 for Greylock, while Justin Martin had a 40 to lead Pittsfield (1-1, 1-1).

TACONIC SWEEPS MONUMENT, ST. JOE

PITTSFIELD >> Ross Omelenchuck was the medalist Wednesday with a 3-over-par 38, and Taconic's six golfers outscored all but two golfers from both Monument Mountain and St. Joseph to score a pair of victories.

Taconic shot 163 to Monument's 194 and St. Joe's 242. The Braves (3-0) earned non-divisional wins, while Monument (1-1, 1-0 South) got its first league win over the Crusaders (0-3, 0-2).

"He just played consistent" golf, Taconic coach said of Omelenchuck, who did not birdie the front nine at Berkshire Hills Country Club. "Three-over with no birdies is a good round, sure and steady."

LEE SWEEPS DRURY, EVERETT

STAMFORD, VT. >> Thomas Fraser was hot in Lee's opening match of the season. Fraser shot an even-par 36, with one birdie and one bogey as the Wildcats beat Drury and Mount Everett.

Lee (2-0, 1-0 Berkshire South) finished with a 160 score, Drury (1-1) shot 188 and Everett (1-3, 1-1 South) 227. All six Lee golfers shot under 50 on Stamford Valley's nine holes.

"They shot a great team score. Their top four guys are very solid," said Drury coach Don Dagnoli. 'We're just gaining some experience. It was a good showing for us."

LEE >> The last time these two Berkshire County rivals met, the Wildcats knocked off the Mounties in the Western Massachusetts Division III semifinals. Tuesday night, it was the Mounties' turn to get the win in the season opener for both teams. Greylock won 25-16, 16-25, 25-19, 27-25.

Jenna Benzinger had 15 kills for the Mounties (1-0, 1-0 Berkshire North), while Dagny Albano had 24 assists and Marley Buffis had 15 digs.

"We lacked offensive punch," Lee (0-1, 0-1) coach John Warner. "It was not the same team Ive been practicing for 10 days."

Kendra Williams paced Lee with four kills, three aces and 26 assists. Libero Anna Wang had six digs.

WAHCONAH 3, MOUNT ANTHONY 0

DALTON >> Wahconah started off its season with a sweep of Mount Anthony, winning 25-5, 25-19 and 25-9.

Emma Parkington led the Warriors (1-0, 1-0 Berkshire North) with nine kills and three aces. Lucy Sears had six aces, six assists and two kills. Laken Cornwell-L'Hote added seven aces and one kill.

PITTSFIELD 3, MONUMENT MOUNTAIN 0

GREAT BARRINGTON >> Pittsfield starts its season with a road win over Monument Mountain, winning 25-12, 25-17, 25-14.

Kamea Quetti led Pittsfield (1-0) with 10 kills and three blocks. Riley Nichols had 21 assists and Katara Mullett had fours kills and three aces. Monument Mountain falls to 0-1 on the year.

High school cross-country

MCCANN TECH 25, FRANKLIN TECH 30

TURNERS FALLS >> The curtain came up on McCann Tech's cross-country season, and the Hornets came away victorious.

The boys and girls teams ran together in one race, accounting for the final score.

Franklin Tech's Sohan Tyler won the race in a time of 19 minutes, 57 seconds. The top Hornet (1-0) was Billy Gallipeau, who was third in 24:51.

The top girls finisher for McCann was Kayla Wilson, who clocked in at 29:58.

WILLIAMSTOWN >> Keene State goalie Gwendolyn Thayer's diving save with 48 seconds left in the game kept the Ephs (0-1) from tying the game in the season opener.

Sami Smith had two goals and an assist for Keene (2-1). Alex Bennett and Hannah Goodrick scored goals for the Ephs. Goodrick's goal cam at 66:59.
