Central Intelligence (PG-13): Two former high school classmates — one, a trim and fit CIA agent who was bullied in school for being overweight; the other, a fast-talking accountant who misses his high school glory days as an athlete — run into each other at a reunion and team up to help save the United States' compromised spy satellite system. This buddy action-comedy doesn't pack many big laughs, but it is likely to keep a smile on your face for the duration. A satisfyingly sweet summer distraction that should only improve with time and repeat viewings. With Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart. • (Bahr, The Associated Press — June 18). 1 hour 54 minutes. BM

Finding Dory (PG): With a little help from her friends, Dory, a blue tang fish with short term memory loss, sets off in search of her parents, from whom she was separated as a child. The most ready made of parent-kid bonding. With the voices of Ellen DeGeneres, Ty Burrell, Albert Brooks, Diane Keaton, Ed O'Neill, Eugene Levy, Kaitlin Olson, Idris Elba, Dominic West. (Coyle, The Associated Press — June 17). 1 hour 37 minutes. BC / BM / NAM / TC

Free State of Jones (R): This fact-based drama stars Matthew McConaughey as Newton Knight, a Mississippi farmer who led an uprising that resulted in the secession of Jones County from the Confederacy. A fascinating slice of history that begins promisingly but evolves into something a little murky and rushed. (Bahr, The Associated Press — June 25). 2 hours 19 minutes. BC

Independence Day — Resurgence (PG-13): An alien invasion of unprecedented force threatens the Earth despite sophisticated defense mechanisms put in place after the events in "Independence Day." With Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox. 2 hours. BC / BM / NAM

Me Before You (R): A wealthy young man from London who is left paralyzed by a car accident forms an unexpected bond with the young woman from a small town who is hired as his caregiver. A slam dunk for fans of the book upon which the movie is based, who will be crying from the first scene. For the rest of us, it's a bit of a harder sell. With Emilia Clarke, Sam Claflin. (Noveck, The Associated Press — June 3). 1 hour 50 minutes. CT

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (R): Hard partying brothers go online to find dates for a sister's wedding in Hawaii. With Zac Efron, Adam Devine, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, Stephen Root. 1 hour 38 minutes. BC / BM / NAM

Our Kind of Patriot (R): The dreary life of a poetics professor vacationing in Morocco perks up after he is swept into a scheme involving as charismatic Russian gangster and British intelligence in this adaptation of a novel by John LeCarré. Director Susanna White makes a lot of strange choices and, in the end, not much of the movie makes sense. Despite all its twists, it has none of the moral and political outrage that might have elevated this genre story into a LeCarré one. With Ewan McGregor, Stellan Skarsgård, Naome Harris, Damien Lewis. (Scott, New York Times — July 4). 1 hour 47 minutes. TC

The BFG (PG): An orphan is captured by a giant — the Big Friendly Giant, it turns out — and taken to a land crawling with much larger giants who like the taste of human beings. Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Roald Dahl's beloved 1982 book is not just some pleasant romp into the world of giants. It's an honest-to-goodness, gut punch of a journey, crackling with heart, uncertainty, and overflowing with all-out wonder. With Ruby Barnhill, Mark Rylance. • (Bahr, The Associated Press — July 2). 1 hour 57 minutes. BC / BM / NAM

The Fits: Drama about an 11-year-old girl who joins and tries to fit in with a girls dance team that practices at a community center in Cincinnati's West End where she trains as a boxer with her brother. 1 hour 12 minutes. IC

The Legend of Tarzan (PG-13): Ten years after his discovery in Africa, Tarzan — known now as John Clayton III — and his wife, Jane, have settled into a civilized life in England. They are lured back to the Congo, unwitting targets of a kidnapping and diamonds scheme engineered by King Leopold II of Belgium and executed by his envoy, Capt. Leon Rom. Tarzan's relevance has drifted over time. This film's main suspense is watching it twist and contort a century-old property into something meaningful. With Alexander Skarsgard, Margot Robbie, Samuel L, Jackson, Christoph Waitz. (Coyle, The Associated Press — July 4). 1 hour 42 minutes. BC / BM / NAM

The Lobster (R): Dark comedy set in a dystopian culture in which the lonely and divorced are rounded up in a white van and brought to a resort, where they are given 45 days to find a mate or be turned into an animal of their choosing. The style in this savage deadpan parody of our coupling obsession is at once gleefully bonkers and grimly banal. With Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, John C. Reilly, Ben Whishaw. • (Coyle, The Associated Press — June 17). 1 hour 59 minutes. TC

The Purge – Election Year (R): U.S. Senator and presidential candidate, Charie Roan, has made purge abolition her life's cause after having survived the slaughter of her family years earlier. Now, as the annual purge is about to begin, Roan and her security chief are caught on the streets of Washington, D.C. as they try to hook up with a band of purge dissidents. This third chapter in the "Purge" series meanders from horror movie images and effects into the kind of straightforward action that shares DNA with westerns and platoon pictures of old. With Elizabeth Mitchell, Frank Grillo, Mykelti Washington, Joseph Julian Sora, Betty Gabriel. (Scott, New York Times — July 5). 1 hour 43 minutes. BM / NAM

The Secret Life of Pets (PG): The inside scoop on the daily lives our pets lead when we aren't there. With the voices of Louis C.K., Kevin Hart, Lake Bell, Eric Stonestreet, Ellie Kemper. 1 hour 30 minutes. BC / BM / NAM / TC

Weiner (R): Frank, candid, revelatory documentary about disgraced former New York congressman Anthony Weiner and his 2013 bid to become mayor of New York in the face of a new sex scandal. LC
