GREAT BARRINGTON -- The John S. Watson Christmas Fund has received initial donations totaling $975. Having experienced almost a doubling in demand, the fund increased its goal this year to $25,000.
The fund is named for the late John Watson, a native of Great Barrington and a reporter for the Berkshire Eagle. Watson inaugurated the fund under the name Community Christ mas Cheer Fund and ran it until 1963 when it was re-named in his honor.
Both clothing and food certificates are mailed out the second week of December allowing families time to redeem them before Christmas.
Donations to the fund can be made through any Berk shire Bank office.
Checks should be made payable to the Watson Christmas Fund.
Those wishing to make donations "in memory of" or "in lieu of Christmas cards" should include their request with the donation check and those wishes will be published in the local newspapers and daily on WSBS radio.
