PITTSFIELD -- A Pittsfield man pleaded guilty on Tuesday in Berkshire Superior Court to drug charges from a 2008 case and was sentenced to up to three years in state prison.

Barkin I. Smith, 38, of Pittsfield, was sentenced to concurrent time for an unrelated case in Bristol (Conn.) Superior Court for which he was sentenced last week to four years in prison. That too involved cocaine dealing.

Smith admitted to selling cocaine in February 2008 in Pittsfield. The defendant was part of a Berkshire County Drug Task Force investigation into cocaine dealing in the city and was charged after a series of controlled drug buys to a police informant.

According to Second As sistant Berkshire District Att orney Robert W. Kinzer III, Smith went on the lam after being indicted by a local grand jury. He was recently arrested in Rhode Island.

Smith pleaded guilty to five charges, including three counts of cocaine distribution. He was sentenced by Judge Daniel A. Ford to a total of 21 2 to three years in state prison. The sentence was in line with a joint recommendation between the DA's office and Smith's attorney, David Pixley.
