WASHINGTON -- Voters at tonight's special town meeting will be asked to spend up to $98,000 to fund 13 expenditures, the majority of the money to cover the cost of renovation and repairs to the Town Hall.
The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall, the former elementary school at 8 Summit Hill Road.
The first article on the warrant seeks $57,121 from the so-called "free cash" account to pay for the replacement of windows and doors at Town Hall. Approval of Article 1 would also rescind a "yes" vote taken at the September special town meeting authorizing the town to borrow $50,000 for the installation.
Town officials say the increase is due to additional, unexpected work for a project that has been completed. They have also determined using surplus funds would be cheaper than taking out a loan.
Meanwhile, voters will be asked to spend $10,000 in available funds to repair the west wall of the Town Hall auditorium.
If approved, the remaining 11 money articles totaling nearly $21,000 will be paid out of free cash or the town's stabilization fund, according to town financial officials. Among the additional spending requests are $6,000 toward health benefits for a new town employee and $5,000 for equipment repairs at the town's Highway Department.
