EGREMONT-- The town has hired a private agency headed by a distinguished attorney who is a former police chief to conduct a full investigation of the Egremont Police Department.

On Monday night, the Select Board's three members voted unanimously to allow Pomeroy Resources, Inc. of Plymouth to conduct the investigation.

That agency is headed by Attorney Robert Pomeroy, who has previously served as police chief in Plymouth, and as an interim chief in both Hamilton and Sandwich. Pomeroy said he will conduct the probe wth several associates.

The decision follows a mutiny by the town's unionized police officers that led the board to vote unanimously to place Police Chief Reena Bucknell on administrative leave with pay two weeks ago.

The Select Board expects the investigation to be completed within three weeks, said Town Administrator Mary Brazie, who is also a board member.
