DALTON -- The magic number in high school sports is .500, the win percentage needed to qualify for a Western Massachusetts tournament.
The Wahconah Regional boys lacrosse team crossed the .500 mark on Wednesday, scoring four goals in the first quarter and holding off Hoosac Valley 9-4 at Nessacus Middle School.
"It's been the goal from the beginning of the season, from the preseason," said Wahconah's Quinn Caesar, who scored two of Wahconah's goals.
Connor Pularo led the Warriors with three goals and two assists. Adam Parker added two goals and an assist for the Warriors (5-4).
It was a frustrating day for the Hurricanes, who had beaten Wahconah in overtime at the start of the season. The two games had started similarly, with Wahconah taking a lead. In the first game, Hoosac came back, but on Wednesday, the Hurricanes couldn't.
Hoosac trailed 4-2 at halftime and cut the lead to 4-3 on Mitch Carlow's goal with 9:59 left in the third quarter. Wahconah got that goal back goal from Dan Hopmans with 7:50 to go in the quarter, the first of two goals in less than 30 seconds and three in less than two minutes.
"I thought for sure after [Carlow's goal], the momentum had swung," said Hoosac defender Tom Galisa. "They just came back stronger than we were on offense."
Roger Stedman was solid in net for Wahconah. He made 11 saves, a couple coming on point-blank shots. He also watched a couple of shots rattle off the goal posts.
"Our level of compete was a lot different" than in the first game, said Wahconah coach Paul Lange. "In that first game, we pulled ahead and stopped competing. This time, we pulled ahead and we didn't. Our compete level was top-notch today."
