Berkshire County is in position to take home a Western Massachusetts individual tennis title with two of the top three boys seeds announced Wednesday.

Mount Greylock's Rohan Shastri is the top seed in the boys tournament, which begins Saturday at Longmeadow High School. Tanner DeVarennes of Lee is seeded third behind Westfield's Loeniz Braind. The top three seeds are unbeaten, with DeVarennes and Shastri sporting 5-0 records.

The girls tournament also kicks off this weekend at Smith College in Northampton. Lenox's Kelly Babich leads 10 singles entrants for Berkshire County with the fourth seed. Monument's Sam White is ninth while teammate Courtney Freadman is 15th. Greylock's Margot Besnard is 14th.

The Mounties have two doubles teams seeded in the boys field. Nathan Majumder and Alex White are third, right ahead of Lee's pairing of Jack Harding and Joe Winston. Greylock's Jake Foehl and Will Nolan hold the seventh seed.

Shastri, a senior, last played in the Western Mass. tournament when he was in eighth grade, when he went 0-2 over two years. He spent the last three years focusing on the USTA junior circuit, rising to No. 1 in New England. DeVarennes has reached the sectional semifinals the last two years.

Babich has already gotten a taste of the top seed in the girls tournament, defending champion Nicole McCann of Amherst. McCann beat Babich 6-1, 6-0 last week.

Also competing is Mount Greylock's Tara Shastri and Pittsfield's trio of Micaela Goodrich, Taylor Turner and Clara Quitmann. Taconic is sending Emily Rice.

Emily Deaso, Amanda Miller, Anna Worley and Anna Black make up Pittsfield's two doubles entries. They're joined by Jen Evans and Cara Freadman of Monument Mountain. The Mounties are sending a doubles team of Tyra Nurmi and Abby Tague.
