WILLIAMSTOWN -- Trailing Monument Mountain by three runs after 41 2 innings, the Mount Greylock baseball team rallied for five runs in the next two innings to engineer yet another come-from-behind win, 8-6 on Friday afternoon.
"I give these kids so much credit," said Greylock coach Steve Messina. "They have so much heart. They never give up."
Down 6-3, the Mounties scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to close to within a run. After holding Monument scoreless in the top of the sixth, the home side dropped the hammer, scoring three more times, all with two outs.
Derek Romejko, Greylock's No. 9 hitter, started the sixth off with a double into center field.
"Every at bat, I was just trying to find a hole," said Romejko. "All I wanted to do was put the ball in play and put some pressure on their defense."
After Sean Houston walked, Jack Thistle delivered another double to score Romejko and Houston and give the home side the lead.
"We already have three or four comebacks this year," said Thistle, who had four RBI on the afternoon. "To tell you the truth, I've forgotten how many. But we have confidence."
Thistle scored the insurance run on an RBI single by Eric Leitch.
Ben Coleman pitched the last two innings for the win.
All this activity was preceeded by a five-run Spartan fifth inning. Trailing 3-1, Monument's first seven players reached base on five hits, a walk and an error. The big hit of the inning was a tremendous three-run home run by the Spartans' Pete Oggiani that sailed easily over the 340-foot mark in left field.
That outburst ended Greylock starting pitcher Andrew Leitch's day. Coleman came in to put out the fire.
"A good high school game," said Monument coach Tom Hankey. "We laid that five-run inning on them and they came right back. Give them credit. We played pretty well, but we made a few mistakes. And you can't do that against a team as good as Greylock."
The first two hitters for the Mounties did an awful lot of damage for their team. Leadoff hitter Houston was 3 for 3 with a walk, scoring three runs. Right behind him was Thistle, who was 3 for 4 with the aforementioned four RBI and a run scored. Eric Leitch and Romejko also had two hits.
For the Spartans, Bobby Kinne had two singles and a double and scored twice. Dan Meandro had a pair of hits and Oggiani had four RBI on the day.
