LONGMEADOW -- Mount Greylock's Rohan Shastri and Lee's Tanner DeVarennes stayed on course for a meeting in today's Western Massachusetts final on Saturday while there could be an All-Mountie final in the doubles tournament.
Shastri, the top seed, dropped just four games in dispatching Cameron Labelle of Ludlow and No. 9 Tayyab Sheikh of Longmeadow. DeVarennes got past Monument's Cam Powell, 6-1, 6-1, before reaching the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-1 win over No. 6 Jonah Kuder-Flam of Northampton.
"That match [with Sheikh] I knew I had to play well," Shastri said. "I think I played a much better match in the second match and I'm confident about [today]."
The Mounties showed their depth in the doubles field, too, with both Mount Greylock teams reach today's semifinals. Alex White and Nathan Majumder rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the third set to beat Longmeadow's Bo Sjoberg and Stephen Freyman 6-4. Will Nolan and Jake Foehl reached the other semifinal.
I predicted them to make it to the finals and play each other," said Greylock coach Stephen Bryant. "I know how great of players my guys are. They fight for every point. Today they proved how great they are."
In singles play, DeVarennes, the third seed, will face No. 2 Loeniz Braind of Westfield today in the semifinals at 9 a.m. Shastri will take on No. 4 Ross Kamin of Longmeadow in the other match.
Monument's Satchel Fisher also fell, losing to Kevin Lindhult of Belchertown, the seventh seed, 6-0, 6-1.
All Berkshire County participants were knocked out in the girls tournament at West Springfield. Monument's Courtney Freadman and Sam White fell to the No. 2 and No. 8 seed, respectively. White was beaten by Ashley Lewis of Sabis, 6-4, 6-4, while Freadman fell to Amherst's Allison McCann, 6-0, 6-0. The Monument doubles team of Cara Freadman and Jen Evans lost to the top-seeded pairing of Hannah Epstein and Ashley Toebes of Longmeadow. Lenox's Kelly Babich bowed out in the quarterfinals, falling to Lisa Calcasola of Longmeadow in a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 loss. Greylock's Margot Besnard lost to Eve Sullivan of Minnechaug, 6-1, 6-1.
