NEWTON -- A former top health care official in President Barack Obama's administration is entering the race for governor of Massachusetts.
Dr. Donald Berwick said in a written statement on Monday that he made the decision to run in 2014 after speaking with residents around the state over the past few months.
Berwick, a pediatrician from Newton, is the former head of the government's Medicare program. He had been designated as the point man for implementing Obama'a federal health care overhaul but stepped aside in November 2011 when Republicans blocked his confirmation in the U.S. Senate.
Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick is not seeking re-election. State Treasurer Steven Grossman is among other Democrats considering a run.
Potential Republican candidates include Charles Baker, the unsuccessful 2010 GOP nominee for governor.
