PITTSFIELD -- A city couple accused of child abuse have pleaded not guilty to their charges and remain free on personal recognizance.

Tanya J. Hadsell, 19, and Jeremy D. Talarico, 29, both of Daniels Avenue, appeared with their attorneys on Tuesday before Berkshire Superior Court Judge John A. Agostini and denied single counts each of assault and battery on a child with injury. Hadsell pleaded not guilty to an additional charge of assault and battery on a child.

Pittsfield Police allege Hadsell and Talarico injured a now-2-year-old boy between Feb. 5 and 6. The child suffered various injuries to his face and pelvis and was taken to the hospital, said police.

The defendants' relationship to the child was not discussed in court.

Hadsell is represented by attorney Raymond J. Jacoub. Talarico's lawyer is Richard D. LeBlanc.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Berkshire District Attorney Rachael Eramo.

A pretrial hearing for both defendants is scheduled for Sept. 10. The judge released them both on personal recognizance.
