To the editor of THE EAGLE:
An increase in the minimum wage is long overdue. Since 1968, wages have not kept up with inflation, but the CEOs of major corporations have seen their wages rise by almost 1,000 percent.
Ever wonder who they took this money from? Could it be the work force? More employees now work longer hours for less pay. For our country to survive, those who have taken for years and received more tax breaks, must now give some of the money back.
An increase in the minimum wage will help the economy grow, as workers who earn more will spend more, which also will create jobs.
How many unemployed workers have been told to seek jobs in the fast-food industry, and then been told that increasing the minimum wage will hurt the youth who are working in the fast-food industry?
More and more heads of household are now working where they can find a job. Let’s equal the playing field just a little. Increasing the minimum wage to at least $10.50 per hour will create a major stimulus for our country, so everyone would benefit.
Out elected officials never have a problem raising taxes on the working poor. In Massachusetts our elected officials passed a forever gas tax increase which hits everyone who needs food stamps or works at poverty level jobs. The gas tax hits every item the low-income workers need to survive. Now it’s time to help those who have to pay for this.
On Labor Day, from 10 a.m. to noon there will be a rally in front of North Adams City Hall to support the minimum raise increase, and to make job creation a number one priority.
Raise your voices, raise your signs, join us! People united will never be defeated!
