PITTSFIELD -- Baystate Medical Center reported Jimmy's Restaurant owner J. Joseph Breault was in critical condition Saturday after a motorcycle accident along Merrill Road left him seriously injured.

Breault, 58, of Westwood Road crashed his 1992 Harley-Davidson just after 7 p.m. on Friday at a section of the road commonly referred to as "Dead Man's Corner."

"Same place as always," Pittsfield Police Officer Mark Maddalena responded when the Eagle asked him where the accident occurred.

Breault, a former City Council candidate, suffered a broken leg and collapsed one lung in the wreck, according to Maddalena. By the time first responders arrived, his 1992 Harley-Davidson motorcycle had caught fire. Merrill Road was closed two hours as members of Pittsfield police and fire departments worked to clear the scene.

Baystate representatives declined additional comment on Breault's condition Saturday. He'd arrived at that hospital Friday night after receiving initial treatment at Berkshire Medical Center.

Pittsfield police said they were investigating the accident and did not speculate on a cause Saturday. They previously reported Breault was driving westbound when his front tire struck the curb, hurling him from the bike.

In 2011, Breault lost his City Council election by just seven votes.
