LANESBOROUGH -- A Pittsfield man is in critical condition at a Boston hospital after coming in contact with a power line while performing tree work.

Around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, the town’s police and fire departments responded to 9 Leslie Ave., where they found Foster Gilbert, of Duke’s Tree Service, dangling in a harness, according to local authorities.

Lanesborough police investigator Tim Sorrell said the 57-year-old came into contact with a primary electric cable belonging to Western Massachusetts Electric Co.

Another tree service working in the area was called to the scene with its bucket truck to help with the rescue. Asplundh Tree Services assisted several police and fire personnel in reaching Gilbert, removing him from his harness and lowering him to the Lanesborough ambulance squad waiting on the ground.

Sorrell said Gilbert appeared to have burn marks on his head and leg.

Gilbert was brought to Berkshire Medical Center and later was transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital, according to Lanesborough police.

Gilbert was in critical condition at Massachusetts General late Tuesday afternoon, according to hospital officials.
