To the editor of THE EAGLE:
A brief history lesson for youngsters and/or those who don’t remember history and are therefore condemned to repeat the past mistakes of Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Remember Afghanistan in the 1980s? The Reagan administration supported the rebels against the Russian occupiers. He armed them, referring to them as the "moral equivalent of [our] Founding Fathers."
Remember who those rebels were? Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida and the Taliban! They would use the arms that Reagan gave them against us.
Now we are considering bombing Syria because we oppose the use of chemical gas to kill its citizens. Does anyone believe bin Laden wouldn’t have used gas against his own people? We know gas was used, but not who used it. Bashar Assad of Syria has been killing "his" people for years. Suddenly we are poised to bomb Syria because we oppose the use of gas to kill people? The dead are just as dead, no matter what means were used to kill them.
We don’t have money to adequately fund Social Security for our seniors, create jobs for the unemployed, or adequately fund unemployment insurance, education for our youth, or the needed repairs to our infrastructure, which would create jobs. But, we have money to blow up Syrians because we don’t agree with the way we think Assad is killing them? Any bombing of Syria will kill Syrians whether it succeeds in destroying gas supplies or not ("collateral damage").
If we are really serious about stopping the use of gas to kill Syrians we should freeze all Syrian assets, embargo all war supplies to Syria and withhold our foreign aid from any nation that does not support us. Hit Assad in the pocketbook and watch him fold or fall.
The Syrian rebels may have used chemical gas. Like the Afghan rebels, they will not be our friends even if we support them. They are more akin to al-Qaida and the Taliban then to our Founding Fathers.
Nation-building at home, and no more foreign wars or military actions abroad!
