PITTSFIELD -- Pittsfield has a new path for learning.
On Tuesday afternoon, city and school officials, alongside members of Berkshire United Way, area educators, students and families celebrated the opening of a new Born Learning Trail during an after-school party at Pitt Park on Columbus Avenue.
The event coincided with Berkshire United Way's annual Day of Caring, which included several volunteer-run projects, including painting area classroom walls, landscaping school and park grounds and hosting teacher school supply drives.
Pittsfield Promise, a local early literacy initiative established in partnership with Berkshire United Way, worked with Berkshire Fence, the Pittsfield Parks and Recreation Department and community volunteers to install the trail.
The trail offers children and families outdoor learning games designed to help build early-literacy skills, a critical component to school readiness.
A Born Learning Trail was installed at Muddy Brook Elementary School in Great Barrington in 2011 and at Springside Park in Pittsfield back in May.
