RUSSELL -- A Pittsfield woman was killed late Monday when the disabled vehicle she was seated in was struck by a tractor-trailer on the Massachusetts Turnpike.

Maria Eugenia Fajardo, 37, was pronounced dead at the scene by members of Westfield Fire Department.

The driver of the pickup, Jose Saldana, 30, and a second passenger, Marcos Contreas, 37, both of Pittsfield, were injured in the crash and were transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. The hospital reported Saldana’s condition as serious late Tuesday, but no information could be learned regarding Contreas’ condition.

No information was available on the driver of the tractor-trailer.

The pickup broke down at about 8 p.m. Monday in the right-hand lane of the westbound turnpike in an area where there are no breakdown lanes, according to state police. It was struck as the truck was making its way up a hill west of Springfield.
