To the editor of THE EAGLE:
If a political party, any party, cannot get enough votes to get its way, is it OK for that party to shut down the government? Is doing so democracy, or is it treason? If you ask a cat to behave like a dog, you’ll be disappointed.
Not wanting to be disappointed further, should we be thinking secession? Massachusetts has it all. It has many of the best universities and hospitals in the world. It has a skilled and educated work force. It is affluent. It has jobs. And, it pays far more into the federal government then it receives from the federal government.
So, if Massachusetts were to secede the standard of living of its residents would go up. Massachusetts could fund all of the federal services its citizens currently receive -- Social Security and so on -- and have money left over.
Maybe it’s time to cut our losses and move on. TOM TRIMARCHI
