To the editor of THE EAGLE:
This government shutdown holds up a mirror that offers a clear and blatant truth. We need to agree to take care of our own people before we can take care of the world, just as we need to stabilize our own families and ourselves before we have the kind of strength that can help anyone else.
As a country, how can we respect ourselves when so many good and helpful people are being forced by their party to deny a lifeline to the most medically needy and forgotten among us. Our churches can’t take care of this many people. Obamacare (the Affordable Care Act) may not be perfect and will require tweaking in the years to come, but how can we turn our backs and ignore our own desperate people? I don’t think too many of us would walk away from someone critically hurt and bleeding in the street.
We could be a shining light of change to the world by becoming an example of what really matters. I love this United States very deeply despite its glaring flaws and always will, but what have we become?
