To the editor of The Eagle:
The shutdown of the federal government is the handiwork of an extremist tea party faction within the Republican Party, a faction which raises Republican obstructionism to a new and unprecedented level. Comprising only 40 members of Congress who represent a tiny portion of the American people, this group has displayed a shocking willingness to sacrifice the health, security and well-being of the entire nation in order to attain its objectives. In attempting to defund the Affordable Care Act, it has precipitated a crisis for partisan political gain, and substituted the law of power for the power of law. What the Republican Party was unable to achieve through the electoral, legislative, and judicial processes, the tea party is now attempting to accomplish through coercion.
The reckless conduct of these tea party Republicans is causing widespread hardship and in some cases irreversible injury to the American people. If this unconscionable course of action continues much longer, it may push our country back into a recession from which it has just begun to emerge. Acceding to the tea party diktat, however, would mean abandoning our bedrock principle of majority rule and subjecting our nation to future outrageous and unacceptable extremist demands.
We ask President Obama to continue to hold firm, and not to give in to these tea party demagogues. The solution to this engineered crisis is in the hands of House Speaker Boehner. He must do what is right, not what advances his career. He must allow the House of Representatives to vote on an unamended budget resolution. The majority of House members now clearly support passage. Unlike the Tea Party Republicans, this majority respects our democracy and, if given the chance, will vote to allow the government to resume functioning and the law of the land to prevail.
