To the editor of THE EAGLE:
The PEDA board recently had a public forum on the proposal to build a shopping complex at the William Stanley Business Park. As I could not attend, I will provide what I think is a common sense approach.
Give the go-ahead to the developer, who wants to spend around $10 million to prepare the site and $40 million to $50 million to build the complex, and let’s get some tax money. I certainly agree with those who think it would be nice to get a biotech firm or something similar, but as one speaker, Ron Marcella Jr., put it, hope is not a strategy. Let’s not forget that the shopping complex would create 200 or more jobs that will mean more money in Pittsfield’s economy.
Everyone at the forum who spoke in opposition spoke eloquently, and all have good intentions. I hope, like they do, that better jobs will come, but when you have a developer willing to invest $50 million in Pittsfield with the economy the way it is, my suggestion would be to have the mayor put out a red, white and blue carpet to show that Pittsfield is the land of opportunity.
