PITTSFIELD -- A Becket man won a 2014 Subaru Outback on Monday in a raffle that benefited the Berkshire Humane Society.

But James Fletcher was nowhere in sight when the drawing took place at Haddad Subaru on East Street.

A worker was coming to repair Fletcher's house on Monday, so he stayed home.

"I never imagined I'd actually win it," Fletcher said.

But he did.

"Yes, I'm excited," said Fletcher's wife, Margaret de Cubas, after receiving a phone call from Haddad Subaru, which provided the $28,000 car for the raffle.

Fletcher's ticket was one of 1,900 sold during the raffle, which began in May. Fletcher bought his ticket on Saturday.

Tickets cost $40 each, although three could be bought for $100.

The raffle raised some $66,000 for the Berkshire Humane Society, which Perreault said will be used to fund a variety of the nonprofit's activities.

This was the first year the Berkshire Humane Society and Haddad had held the raffle, but Perreault said he hopes it turns into an annual event.

"We'll see how it goes," Perreault said.
