To the editor of THE EAGLE:
I agree with the citizens who are not in favor of retail at the former GE site. How can we say yes to their retail proposal when we don’t even know what "big box" wants to locate on the site? What if it is a competitor of one of the chains we now have? Or one that just wants to expand its existing site like Wal-Mart did in North Adams? How many times can you slice the pie and not hurt someone? We are not an area that can support two competing big box stores.
We have waited this long to develop this site and shouldn’t now settle for quick fixes that will not really improve Pittsfield’s job market.
When even the community development director feels it is not the way to go, then you know that it is a bad choice. Does that area need more heavy truck traffic? A large parking lot? No, not for a retail facility. We should wait for some industrial use or the decision by the state on its proposal.
