To the editor of THE EAGLE:
Contrary to the Oct. 16 article "Truck shortcut through Dalton divides officials," the Washington Select Board supports a heavy truck ban like that in place on Holmes Road. Like Dalton, we have received numerous complaints from residents concerned for their safety. Portions of the road are quite narrow, steep and winding. There are no guardrails.
While I am sympathetic to our truckers -- many of our residents have trucking businesses -- this road was neither designed nor built to withstand heavy truck traffic. The roadbed suffers potholes, scalloping and severe frost heaves in spring that are all exacerbated by the passage of heavy vehicles. This also adds to safety concerns and makes maintenance far more costly and difficult than it needs to be.
I would be happy to have the road reconstructed to a Department of Transportation standard that would support all traffic, but until that happens safety has to take precedence over commerce.
