To the editor of THE EAGLE:
This has been a relatively quiet Pittsfield election campaign. No opponent for our mayor and for several ward councilor incumbents. I hope that doesn’t result in a low voter turnout on Election Day. There are councilor and school board positions to be decided and Election Day is Pittsfield’s "Town Meeting." It’s our best opportunity to be heard. We should take some time to get to know the candidates and to exercise our voting power.
There are several strong candidates for city councilor at large. I have had the opportunity to get to know Jim Conant and I am convinced that he would be an effective councilor. As chairman of the Pittsfield Conservation Commission, he is knowledgeable about environmental issues. He is completing a term on the school board so he is familiar with the issues in the school system.
Anyone who has played golf at the Country Club of Pittsfield can attest to his expertise in his chosen profession. The course is consistently in tip-top condition thanks to his technical knowledge and effective management of resources. I am going to enthusiastically vote for Jim. I hope many of you will do likewise.
