To the editor of THE EAGLE:
Kudos to the Board of Trustees at Westfield State University for suspending Evan Dobelle and to Richard Freeland, the state’s commissioner of education, in recognizing the reckless manner that Dobelle lavishly spent university funds for personal pleasure.
Rather than just tell the truth, Mr. Dobelle and his lawyer have threatened a lawsuit. To cover up his actions, they have accused Jack Flynn, chairman of the board of trustees, of hiring an auditing firm without authorization from the other board members and meeting in private with two board members in violation of the state’s open meeting law. Mr. Dobelle also believes that Commissioner Freeland is trying to oust him from his position and take over. Do you believe this?
All of these allegations are made to cover up his actions. Having been accused of the same actions at the University of Hawaii, where he reaped over a million dollars from a legal settlement, he is taking the same course of action to come out clean with a profit! Westfield State University has lost money due to Mr. Dobelle’s lavish spending, is losing money paying him while under suspension, and more importantly has sustained a stain on its reputation.
Let’s hope that the courts see him for what he is, as someone who has redefined the job description of university president to satisfy his selfish needs.
