To the editor of THE EAGLE:
There is something I want to make sure the people of Ward 3 understand. Nicholas Caccamo will have to abstain from certain votes because he works for the Pittsfield Public school system. The problem is people are getting hung up on the number of votes he will have to abstain from when what people need to concentrate on is that he would have to abstain from any voting at all.
It really does not matter whether it is one or 100. What matters is that Ward 3 will not have a voice in every matter that is brought before the council. He will have to check with the State Ethics Commission’s legal division whenever there is even a question as to whether or not he can participate in certain voting.
At the most recent debate at BCC he said there was only one vote he would have to abstain from if he was elected. Well that one vote he was referring to was the school budget, which was over $50 million of our 2013 budget. That affects every taxpayer in the city and the entire school system. I think that is a pretty big issue for Ward 3 not to have a voice on.
I hope that the residents in Ward 3 will really think long and hard about this issue before they cast their vote on Nov. 5.
