SPRINGFIELD (AP) -- A former Springfield day care worker has been found guilty of assaulting a seven-month-old baby in her care.
The Republican newspaper ( http://bit.ly/17qZqlZ ) reports that a jury on Tuesday convicted 24-year-old Jennifer Lemelin, of East Longmeadow, of assault and battery on a child. Lemelin faces sentencing on Thursday.
Prosecutors said the baby sustained permanent damage from a brain injury that occurred at the Giggle Gardens Learning Center in Springfield in March 2011.
Lemelin's attorney, Alejandro Ramos, said in his closing argument to the jury that the assault did not happen and that the evidence presented by the state did not support the allegations.
The original charge was assault and battery on a child causing substantial bodily injury, but the jury in its verdict changed the wording to "causing injury."
