To the editor of THE EAGLE:
As a Ward 7 resident I have had experience with former Ward 7 councilor Joseph Nichols and, being in close proximity to both Wards 1 and 6, have had not so pleasant dealings with the current councilors from those wards.
Mr. Nichols as responsive and responsible to the residents of his former ward in his years on the City Council. Each and every time I had an occasion to contact Joe with a concern about something going on in Ward 7 he promptly answered his phone or called me back quickly if he was busy working or handling another problem for someone else.
On the rare occasions when I had to call the present Ward 6 councilor, John Krol, on an issue involving a citywide vote or concern I got either a full voice mail box or no return call. The same can be said for current Ward 1 councilor Christine Yon.
I am writing to endorse both Joseph Nichols and Lisa Tully for election to Wards 6 and 1. Joe always came to the council meetings ready to vote and debate his position intelligently, having done extensive research and preparation for every vote, not voting on an issue because the then mayor told him to or because his council clique had decided among themselves beforehand to vote in a certain way. The former scenario is how, in my opinion, councilors Krol and Yon have voted on most issues before both subcommittees and the full council.
I am assured that Lisa Tully will be an independent voice for Ward 1 also, not being beholden to any clique or special interest to vote on their behalf as, again in my opinion, the current Ward 1 councilor does. She has a long history of helping residents in her ward and listening to everyone, not just the connected few. She is a member of a family with a long history of service in Ward 1 and will continue that service in an exemplary way.
I urge all residents of Wards 1 and 6 to vote for independent voices as their representatives and not allow the practices of a disastrous eight years preceding the current mayor to continue. Please vote Lisa Tully in Ward 1 and Joseph Nichols in Ward 6 to get our city moving on the right track, not a disastrous old track.
