To the editor of THE EAGLE:
OK, now The Berkshire Eagle has aggravated my number one sports pet peeve by buying into the ridiculous hyperbole of the TV hypesters in using the term "world champions." The Boston Red Sox are world champions of nothing! Neither are the Miami Heat or Baltimore Ravens.
The Red Sox deserve full credit for their wonderful achievement, but they are simply champions of the league in which they compete! World Series champions, yes. . . world champions, no!
Just because you have a Japanese closer, a Dominican DH and an Aruban third baseman, it doesn’t enable you to claim world domination, no matter what Joe Buck declares. I think teams from Japan, Cuba and the Dominican Republic would have something to say about this, if it came down to it, as the World Baseball Classic has shown us.
Invite every league champion worldwide to play, then we’d see who’s world champion. Until then, stick to the facts.
