NORTH ADAMS -- A North Adams woman is dead after being struck by an SUV on West Main Street on Wednesday night, authorities said.

Karen Shields, 53, who lived on West Main Street, was crossing the road in the area of K-M Motor Sales about 9 p.m. when she was struck by a Hyundai Tucson, according to North Adams Police Sgt. James Burdick.

She was not in a crosswalk when she was struck, police said.

Shields was taken to North Adams Regional Hospital before being transported by helicopter to Bay State Medical Center in Springfield. She died early Thursday from "blunt trauma injuries."

The driver, Ronald Fredette, 57, of Pownal, Vt., is not likely to face charges in the crash, police said, although the accident remains under investigation.

North Adams Police Director Michael Cozzaglio said there is "no indication of any driver error at this time."

Fredette, who has a history of heart problems, was taken to the hospital with chest pains.

North Adams Fire Department, North Adams Police, and North Adams Ambulance responded to the accident.
