PITTSFIELD -- A man snatched the purse of a 73-year-old woman on McKay Street near the Beacon Cinema on Monday evening, and police are asking the public for help catching him.

The woman was not injured in the robbery, but an undisclosed amount of money, along with credit cards and other items were stolen.

Police say the woman was not injured.

"We're looking for witnesses to this crime," said Pittsfield Police Detective Lt. Michael Grady. "Anyone with information is asked to call us."

The woman was coming out of the alley near the Beacon Cinema, at 57 North St., when a man grabbed her purse and fled north on McKay Street, across Depot Street, and into the alley near Baba Louie's Pizza.

The thief was described as a while male, about 5-foot, 6 inches tall, between 25 and 30 years old, wearing a beanie-style winter cap and a dark hooded sweatshirt.

The robber faces a charge of unarmed robbery of a person 60 or older, which carries a maximum life sentence in state prison.
