PITTSFIELD -- Soldier On is stepping up for kids this holiday season.

On Wednesday, volunteer veterans from Pittsfield and the Northampton area will prepare and serve food for a spaghetti dinner to benefit The Eagle Santa Fund.

The fund, begun by The Berkshire Eagle, helps bring cheer to children during the holiday season by providing parents, who cannot afford gifts, certificates to receive toys for their kids.

This will be the first year Soldier On will host a dinner to benefit the fund.

"A big part of veterans' rehabilitation through Soldier On is helping others," said Maggie Porter, the organization's director of communications.

"Helping others helps enhance the quality of life. The vets are really pulling together this year as a way to support and give back to the community," she said.

On Dec. 21, Soldier On will also host a holiday dinner at the Masonic Lodge to benefit Pittsfield children.

The annual Eagle Santa Fund aims to collect $45,000 this year. So far, more than $10,000 has been donated.
