PITTSFIELD -- A city woman who police say was caught trying to burglarize the apartment of a woman she referred to as an "old friend" is being held on $600 bail.

Ebony Unique Hamilton, 32, of Onota Street, was inside the woman's West Street apartment on Nov. 5 with several bags full of "miscellaneous items," including one filled with electronics, when the 24-year-old resident returned home, according to police.

The woman said she knew Hamilton, but that she was not welcome in her house. When she went to call the police, Hamilton fled.

Hamilton was in Central Berkshire District Court on Wednesday after being arrested by the Pittsfield Police the day before on three warrants.

She denied a charge of breaking and entering for a misdemeanor, telling the court through her lawyer that she didn't know the woman and had never been in that house.

The Berkshire District Attorney's Office asked the court to revoke her bail on two open cases. There was also a request for $1,000 bail on each case.

One is a South County case from October in which Hamilton allegedly possessed heroin. The other case goes back to June.

Hamilton allegedly smashed a plastic tray over the head of her ex-boyfriend at a West Housatonic motel on Jun. 23 after he accused her of stealing money from his pants' pocket while he slept. She then allegedly began punching the room's door, smashing a window with her fist.

Her attorney, Marc C. Vincelette, admitted his client had a drug problem, but denied that she was dangerous. Of the older cases, he said the alleged victim in one is now in jail awaiting trial on drug trafficking charges and that there were likely evidence suppression issues in the other case. He asked the court to release his client on her own recognizance.

Judge Fredric D. Rutberg denied the request by the DA's office to revoke Hamilton's bail and ordered Hamilton held on a total of $600 in bail. She is due back in court in February.

Hamilton was still in custody as of Wednesday afternoon.
