To the editor of THE EAGLE
I am not an expert, but I was thinking perhaps the Sheriffs Department could use a portion of the old jail on Second Street as a location for a much needed cot shelter.
I am aware that it is currently used as a juvenile corrections setting, but if the building has the space and since it is already being heated couldn’t some system be devised for all to safely benefit?
Perhaps the juvenile offenders could participate in the basics of setting up, supplying basics and cleaning as a form of community service, at the same time learning first hand that their current decisions could possibly lead them to such a circumstance?
Also, I know the old York Street jail in Springfield after it was no longer needed to house and rehabilitate was used as a homeless shelter until it eventually was taken down.
Just something to consider.
