To the editor of THE EAGLE:
This season is a time for taking special care of those in need, but for Pittsfield and Berkshire County, it is business as usual. We see a need and we address it. Our Berkshire legislators often express pride in how we get things done even when government appropriations may not be adequate to take care of all of our community needs. It is amazing and heart-warming to witness how citizens of Berkshire County continuously come forward to help.
It seems like every week there is a golf tournament or a pasta supper for a special cause. There are many nonprofits helping people of all ages and powerful service organizations continuously meeting community needs. We have special volunteers throughout our community helping to provide programs for seniors, youth and families. Our community leaders address literacy, hunger, poverty, health, joblessness, injustice and inequality every day.
We should be very proud to be Berkshirites, because "we get it" when it comes to helping our fellow human beings. There is much work to be done and if we are united in our efforts, we will make a difference.
I would like to pay tribute to all of our nonprofits and service organizations. These organizations are so numerous that I wouldn’t want to start mentioning them, but I would challenge everyone to write a letter and let the community know how your group or nonprofit is making a difference. Let’s shout from the rooftops that Pittsfield and the Berkshires keep the holiday spirit year-round.
Thank you for all you do and keep up the good work.
