PITTSFIELD -- A Pittsfield man accused of kicking in the door of his ex-girlfriend's home and assaulting her with a kitchen knife is being held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing on Monday.

Vaughn Ashley, 20, of Third Street, broke into his ex-girlfriend's Maple Street home about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, pushed her onto her bed, put a knife to her throat and told her: "This is all going to end tonight," Pittsfield Police said.

Ashley initially attempted to pry open the door with a knife, which broke, before kicking the door in, police said. Two friends of the 21-year-old victim were present in the residence at the time. They said the door burst open and Ashley entered the home brandishing a knife. He pushed open his ex-girlfriend's bedroom door, where the woman and her friend were hiding and threatened her with the knife.

He also punched and stabbed a wall before being dragged out of the house by a friend, who was not charged in connection with the case, according to a police report.

The victim told police she and Ashley had dated for about seven years, that they had "issues" and that Ashley had threatened her with a gun this past summer.

She had gone to Vermont and had just moved back to Pittsfield. Ashley had just found out where she was living, she told officers.

After his arrest, Ashley was treated for minor injuries police said he got from kicking in the door and punching the wall.

Ashley, appearing with attorney Jill Sheldon, pleaded not guilty in Central Berkshire District Court on Thursday to single counts of felony home invasion and vandalizing property and misdemeanor assault and battery. The Berkshire District Attorney's Office requested the defendant be held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Monday.

Judge Michael J. Ripps ordered Ashley sent to the Berkshire County Jail & House of Correction without bail until Monday's hearing.

If determined to be a danger to the alleged victim or the community, Ashley could be held without bail for up to 90 days.
