PITTSIFIELD -- A city man who police say beat an acquaintance so badly he left his shoe print on his face has been sentenced to 18 months in jail.

Daniel W. Harrington, 39, of Linden Street, went to the Hamlin Street home of a 27-year-old acquaintance on Nov. 19 and attacked the man when he answered the door, according to Pittsfield Police.

The man told police that Harrington threw him down the stairs, punched and kicked him in the head, face and body. He then went through his pockets and stole his cigarettes.

Police said they could clearly make out Harrington’s shoe print on the side of the man’s face.

No motive was given for the attack.

The victim was treated at Berkshire Medical Center for his injuries and was later released. Harrington was arrested without incident a short time after the attack at his home.

Harrington, appearing with his attorney, William B. Barry, pleaded guilty in Central Berkshire District Court on Friday to felony assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (shod foot) and larceny from a person and misdemeanor assault and battery.

Originally charged with armed robbery, the charge was amended down to larceny from a person by the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office.

Assistant Berkshire District Attorney Michael D’angelo said Harrington has a five-page record that includes numerous assault charges and has previously served time. Earlier this month, the DA’s Office was asking for 2 1/2 years in jail, but after discussions with Harrington’s lawyer and the victim, the sentence recommendation was lowered to 18 months, which Harrington agreed to serve.

The victim was in court on Friday, but did not give an impact statement. He did tell the court he agreed with the sentence recommendation.

Judge Paul M. Vrabel sentenced Harrington to 18 months at the Berkshire County Jail & House of Correction in line with the agreed recommendation.

Harrington has been held in jail on $50,000 surety bail since his arrest. He was given credit for the time he has already served.
