WILLIAMSTOWN -- Police have identified a Pittsfield woman as the victim in Thursday's head-on collision on Route 7 in Williamstown.
Arlene Campoli, 72, of Cole Avenue, was the passenger in a 2010 Hyundai Elantra that appears to have crossed into the path of a 2009 Buick Lucerne about 10:21 a.m., according to a "preliminary" investigation by Williamstown Police.
Campoli was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield by County Ambulance, where she was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the Elantra, Jill Greene, 53, of Cherry Street, Pittsfield, is listed in critical condition at Berkshire Medical Center, according to police.
Helen Munzer, 73, and John Munzer, 70, of Brookline, are currently listed in stable condition at Berkshire Medical Center. They were the driver and passenger, respectively, of the Lucerne.
The Munzers required extrication from their vehicle by the Jaws of Life, according to police.
Williamstown Police Sgt. Scott McGowan said an investigation into the accident is ongoing but that road conditions were a "principal" factor in the crash.
There was an accumulating snowfall at the time of the accident, McGowan noted. The road was closed off for more than six hours following the collision and both cars were totaled in the wreck.
The Williamstown Fire District, Village Ambulance Service, North Adams Police, Lanesborough Police, and Massachusetts State Police also responded to the scene.
