PITTSFIELD -- City firefighters extinguished a flaming pickup truck in frigid conditions Tuesday night at John's Auto motive on Waconah Street.

Officers of the Pittsfield Police Department responded to an alarm activation at the garage, located at 165 Waconah St., shortly after 9 p.m.

Noticing smoke coming from the windows, the officers called in the Pittsfield Fire Department. Deputy Fire Chief Michael Polidoro said "the fire was contained in a very short amount of time."

"The building sustained minor damage, the vehicle itself was destroyed and no one was inside the building at the time," Polidoro said.

With temperatures Tuesday night hovering just over zero degrees, plus significant wind chill, Polidoro said conditions posed a challenge for firefighters. Water deployed at the scene froze quickly, he said.

"I'm happy I'm here [at the station], let me put it that way," Polidoro said. "I'm sure it's a skating rink down there."

The cause of the fire was unknown Tuesday night. Investigators with the Pittsfield Fire Department remained at the scene after 11 p.m.
