PITTSFIELD -- A North Adams man faces charges of drunken driving and reckless endangerment of a child after his arrest Wednesday in Lanesborough.
Lanesborough Police said they arrested Carl R. Tiernan, 29, of East Main Street, North Adams, on Wednesday after receiving a 911 call at 9:20 p.m. reporting that a woman had jumped from a vehicle on Old State Road.
Tiernan was arraigned Thursday in Central Berkshire District Court on an OUI charge, reckless endangerment of a child, and reckless endangerment of a child while driving under the influence.
In his report, Lanesborough Police Officer Benjamin Garner said he responded to Old State Road near the intersection with Swamp Road. He said he met the director of Berkshire Mall security there and was told the man in the car with a flat tire parked in the roadway smelled of alcohol.
Garner said he found a woman lying on the ground near the passenger side door, which was open. He said he was told she had suffered an anxiety attack concerning the flat tire.
Tiernan, who said he was the driver, said they had just left a department store at the nearby mall. The couple's 15-month-old child was in the vehicle, Garner said.
In paperwork supporting the charges, police said Tiernan registered a blood-alcohol reading of .211 in a field test and a .179 BAC reading at the police department. The legal limit to drive is .08.
The car was towed and the woman and child given a ride.
