PITTSFIELD -- A homeless man was charged with larceny on Friday for allegedly stealing a jacket last week from St. Stephen's Church on East Street, police said.

William Larow, 39, allegedly was agitating patrons at a dinner in the church's basement on Friday evening when police were called about 5:15 p.m., Pittsfield Police Sgt. Michael Maddalena said.

While officers tried to calm him down, Larow allegedly screamed at other patrons and yelled out obscenities.

He initially was charged with disturbing the peace. As police interviewed witnesses, Larow was identified as the person believed to have stolen a jacket from the church, which contained car keys and a checkbook, on Jan. 3.

He was charged with multiple counts of larceny and was remanded to the Berkshire County Jail & House of Correction.
