LANESBOROUGH -- JCPenney is planning to close 33 underperforming stores across the country, but the chain’s store in the Berkshire Mall is not one of them.
The store closings will result in the elimination of approximately 2,000 jobs, JCPenney announced on Thursday.
The layoffs and store closings are part of a turnaround effort announced on Thursday by the Plano, Texas-based chain that JCPenney says will result in annual cost savings of $65 million, beginning this year.
The final closings are expected to be completed by early May. The closest store to the Berkshires that is slated to close is located in Meriden, Conn.
