PITTSFIELD -- A telephone scam targeted customers and non-customers of Berkshire Bank on Tuesday morning, the bank has confirmed.

According to a person who received the automated phone call, customers are informed that their debit/master card has been locked. The caller than asks the person to press a number on their phone that leads to Berkshire Bank's security department.

At least one call originated from the 253 area code, which is in the state of Washington.

"We would never make a phone call looking for personal information," said Berkshire Bank spokesman Ray Smith. "That right there is a red flag."

Smith did not know how many customers were affected.

To avoid phishing or spoofing scams, Berkshire Bank suggests customers never provide personal information in response to an unsolicited request, and ask that they contact the financial institution if they are unsure the contact is legitimate.

The bank also suggests that customers never provide account information either over the phone or in response to an unsolicited Internet request; and to review account statements regularly to ensure that all charges are correct.
