HINSDALE -- A new committee in Hinsdale plans to examine whether the town would benefit by hiring a town administrator to support the Select Board.
"The main reason we’re looking into this is that these small town councils are basically made up of part-time volunteers," said Alan Lubin, a member of a seven-person committee that’s been organized to assess the prospect. "No matter how dedicated, they simply don’t have the time to research all the issues likely to come before them in this day and age."
A town administrator working on Hinsdale’s affairs five days a week could prove a boon, Lubin said.
The new official could better inform the board, particularly on hairy subjects like state environmental regulations, and devote more time to money-gathering techniques like grant seeking.
The committee plans to probe the ways in which a town administrator could help Hinsdale and what the numbers say if such a hire were made. Would it prove cost-effective? Lubin says they intend to find out.
The work will consist of conducting interviews with former town administrators and members of town governments who operate with an administrator, according to Lubin.
Its seven members each addressed letters to the Select Board expressing interest in being part of the committee.
In addition to Lubin and Hinsdale Select Board Chairwoman Bonnie Conner, a finance committee member, two business owners and others with "a good reputation in town" comprise the new commitee, Lubin said.
"I think it’s a very good committee," he added.
The prospective hire could appear on the town’s warrant for voter consideration as early as this year’s annual town meeting, Lubin said.
At the Wednesday, Jan. 29 meeting of the Hinsdale Select Board, officials will discuss the committee and may schedule its first meeting.
