PITTSFIELD -- A city high school basketball rivalry dubbed, "The War on the Floor" will christen the new gym floor at Pittsfield High School.
On Friday, a quadruple header of basketball games between the Pittsfield High Generals and Taconic Braves is scheduled around a brief ceremony celebrating the hardwood floor in the Moynihan Field House.
The boys and girls junior varsity games precede the 7 p.m. ceremony followed by the boys and girls varsity contests.
The four-game event has been held before to promote both schools basketball programs, alternating between Pittsfield High and Taconic, and seemed fitting to showcase the new-look floor installed last fall, according to Pittsfield Public Schools Athletic Director Jim Abel.
"We've done this almost every other year and the students love it," Abel said "The students have dubbed the basketball games, ‘The War on the Floor.' "
While the new gym floor, which cost $174,000, was installed a month before the high school basketball season began, the project disrupted indoor physical education classes and displaced the Pittsfield High volleyball team for the first two months of school.
The volleyball squad played all but two "home" matches at other city schools, until the floor was completed in late October. A two-inch overlay that included 3/4 inch hardwood maple was placed over the existing non-wood flooring, which had become too slippery for players and gym students to use safely, city and school officials said.
Abel says the upgrade has been praised by both the home and visiting teams.
"Not only Pittsfield High players, but players from opposing schools have noticed a big difference," he said. "Most basketball players and coaches prefer a hardwood floor."
