PITTSFIELD -- The Berkshire Chamber of Commerce has received 23 applications, including seven from local candidates, to replace Michael Supranowicz as president and CEO.

The deadline for submitting applications was Jan. 31, according to Peter Stasiowski, the director of the chamber's board of directors. Supranowicz left his position at the chamber on Jan. 24.

Stasiowski did not provide specific information on any of the candidates for Supranowicz's position, but said the applicants come from "all corners of the United States."

"A national search these days is pretty easy to conduct because of the Internet," he said, "but we were pleasantly surprised because of the geography."

He said the search committee will begin compiling a short list of candidates to interview this month.

"They will conduct either face-to-face or Skype interviews," Stasiowski said.

He said the committee still hopes to make a decision in March, which was the original timeline.

"We're right on track for that," he said. "We don't have a hard and fast deadline for ourselves."

June Roy-Martin, the chamber's vice president of member services, is serving as the organization's interim president and CEO until a successor to Supranowicz is found.

By virtue of his position with the chamber, Supranowicz also served as COO of 1Berkshire Strategic Alliance, the county's leading economic development agency.

His successor at the chamber will also assume that position at 1Berkshire, officials have said.

Supranowicz announced in October that he would leave the chamber by the end of January to become the director of business development at Hillcrest Educational Centers. He became president and CEO of the Chamber in 2005, and COO of 1Berkshire in 2012. He had been with the Berkshire Chamber since 2001.
