After viewing the film "Monuments Men" recently, I was reminded of the Berkshires' own monument man, S. Lane Faison, Jr. (1907-2006), the brilliant and charismatic art historian on the faculty of Williams College for many years. His talk in one of my classes at MCLA several years ago left his audience mesmerized, so stunning was his tale about being part of the team investigating and detailing Nazi art looting, Goering's collection and Hitler's museum.
I remember Faison with great affection and am reminded again that these Berkshire hills are filled with so many amazing, but sometimes invisible, heroes.
