BOSTON (AP) -- Another winter storm is hitting Massachusetts, bringing with it heavy wet snow, rain and high winds.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for central and western areas Thursday. Up to 18 inches of snow could fall there, with widespread totals of 10 to 14 inches expected. Most schools are closed in that part of the state, including Springfield and Worcester.

Non-essential executive branch state workers in the five westernmost counties have been given the day off.

Coastal areas, including Boston, and southeastern Massachusetts, are expected to get between 4 and 6 inches of snow and winds gusting to 45 mph as warmer ocean air mixes in rain. Cape Cod and the islands are expected to see only an inch or two of snow.
